A career in one word?

When the DBA asked Daniel Weil to describe his career in design in one word, he chose 'Relevant'...

Biography

Daniel’s work has been attributed to moving design from a modernist to post-modernist era and his work has been exhibited across the globe from MoMA New York to the V & A and the Israel Museum of Art.

Qualifying in architecture from the University of Buenos Aires in his native Argentina in 1977, Daniel relocated to London to study industrial design at the Royal College of Art, where he received his MA (RCA) in 1981. On completing his studies Daniel designed and manufactured his own products.

Daniel then joined Pentagram as a partner in 1992. His many projects have included product, packaging, interiors and art direction for Swatch; packaging and concept stores for Lego; packaging for Tretorn, Superga and Pantone; CD packaging for EMI; interiors for King’s College, London; new retail interiors for Boots and Cass Art London.

He has also created room products and accessories for luxury resorts and hotels such as the new Bulgari Hotel in Milan and The Dorchester in London. A major client over recent years has been United, America’s leading air carrier for whom Daniel has created the branding, naming and designing of aircraft interiors as well as on-board products, lounges, and airport furniture.

In 2005 Daniel’s exhibition ‘Daniel Weil: Time Again’ was held England & Co.

The exhibition represented his own collection of ground-breaking and inspiring creations including the cult design of the ‘Bag Radio’.

The work shown here and at various other exhibitions around the world has been described by Sir Christopher Frayling at the RCA as contributing to ‘a turning point in design’.

Daniel was Professor of Industrial Design, Vehicle Design and Design Management at the Royal College of Art between 1991-1995. He was also Unit Master at the Architectural Association between 1982-1986 and is a Senior Fellow of the Royal College of Art.

When he’s not working Daniel also likes to keep everyone happy by talking, working, being with his family, drawing, eating, cheering Argentina and thinking – all at the same time if possible!
