Michael Wolff in the chair

Glasgow 19 June 2007:

Putting Michael in the 'hot seat' will be the following intrepid interviewers:

Simon Farrell, MD, Tayburn
Simon moved to Scotland 2 years ago when he took on the role of Managing Director at Edinburgh based design consultancy, Tayburn. His responsibilities within the company include managing the core elements of the operating business, new business development, strategy development and client liaison.

He has over 15 years experience in the world of branded communications from an academic perspective, a client perspective and agency perspective. Academically, Simon gained a first class honours degree in Business Studies from Sheffield University and followed this up with an MBA from Warwick University.

His client-side experience came from a 6 year stint working for Scottish & Newcastle’s retail division. During this time he held various senior marketing roles in retail brand development. From an agency point of view he has worked at Manchester based advertising agency BDH/TBWA and design agency The Chase before moving his family North of the border.

Outside of work he is an avid music fan and would-be DJ.

Neil McGuire, Director/Designer, After the News
Neil McGuire graduated in 2003, and is a designer and tutor in visual communications at Glasgow School of Art. He is director of After the News (ATN), a design agency working with a range of clients on design and communication issues, predominantly graphics and communication in the arts sector.

ATN also takes an interest in design as a tool for positive social change, and has recently contributed to The Scottish Show and worked collaboratively with architects and urbanists on Glasgow is made by us - part of the Six Cities design festival.

ATN were one of the initial co-hort on NESTA’s creative pioneer programme, and continue to work on the project they developed through that, “off-brand” - a catalyst for finding alternative approaches to brands and branding. ATN also entertain themselves (and hopefully others) with self initiated projects including Lorem Ipsum (a work in progress), Vectors are from venus, suvskillkids.com and wodast.org - audio design discussion and debate online.

Neil's hobbies include writing things about himself in the third person and describing his company in ways that make it sound like there are more people involved than just him.

Ivor Williams,

Visual Communication student,GSA
Ivor was born in Edinburgh and studied initially at the Leith School of Art in Edinburgh, before entering the Glasgow School of Art in 2003. He is now a graduate from the Visual Communication department, where he specialised in Graphic Design.

His work has recently focused on reclaiming old processes like bookbinding and woodcut printing and reinvesting them into contemporary graphics. Some of his projects have been based upon
current attitudes to atheism, the role of contemporary typography in relation to the work of
Beatrice Warde and the etymology of the keyboard symbols accessed through the shift key.

He hopes to further explore bookbinding and all its associations and is hoping to further his skills and gather experience with employment in the industry.
