16 April 2012

As part of our ongoing work with the Associated Parliamentary Design and Innovation Group, the DBA held an industry roundtable at the Houses of Parliament for DBA members to share their thoughts on the issues currently affecting the design industry.

DBA members who attended were asked to share issues that were important to them - not only to air them to government, but to help inform the DBA's ongoing agenda.

Attendees were also asked for their opinions on a gamut of possible issues: education, talent supply, diversity, IP, challenges from abroad, procurement, government support to the industry, and the role design could play in policy formation. Of these, education, challenges from abroad, and design in policy formation triggered the most lively responses. And in general the sentiment in the room was that the industry could be more proactive in addressing some of these issues itself.

  • Key discussion points were:
What are the major challenges that the UK’s design leaders see facing the industry?
  • Where – if they aren’t already – might designers make a difference to some of the challenges facing the UK government and society?
