The Challenge
BDO International is the fifth biggest worldwide accounting network. Its capabilities for international clients were substantial but remained latent, and growth in international revenue through inter-firm referrals was declining. BDO International wanted to capitalise on a market opportunity to increase trans-national business between its member firms by becoming a truly joined-up network. This could only be done by building an international culture of collaboration and knowledge sharing across the organisation.

The Brief
Landor Associates was commissioned to design a programme of internal brand communication that would engage all member firms. It needed to inspire people, direct behavioural change and promote alignment across the network. Ultimately, it had to create a sense of unity and common purpose across a fragmented network of firms and employees.

The Design
The approach Landor took was to use face-to-face communication, as it was seen to be the most effective channel in a professional services environment. A programme of events and workshops was developed, accompanied by digital channel and internal communications collateral and Brand Champions networks training, in order to get buy-in at every level of the firm.

The Results
The internal brand communications programme launched two and a half years ago – and since then BDO International has delivered sustained and consistent double-digit growth in international revenue. BDO International’s design investment was recouped just two months into the programme’s roll-out. There is now evidence of brand engagement among all the organisation’s 30,000 employees in 111 countries.
