A
unique opportunity to be inspired by design luminary Michael
Wolff and to decide the winner of the DBA 24 hour Inclusive
Design Challenge on the evening of Wednesday 6 April at Imperial
College, London SW1.
24hr Inclusive Design Challenge organised by the DBA and HHRC
and sponsored by SCOPE
Background
‘Fully Equipped',
the March 2000 Audit Commission report was an unequivocal
wake-up call to small businesses, service providers and government.
In no uncertain terms, it highlighted the poor levels of design
endemic to the disability aids and equipment sector and the
need for a reform of current practices. In August 2000, the
DTI described the difficulties disabled people have in using
everyday consumer products. (These reports can be downloaded
from www.hhrc.ac.uk/events/DBAChallenge/index.html)
The DBA Design Challenge
was created in 2000 as a creative response to the situation.
It illustrates and underscores the key role design can play
in improving quality of life for disabled and older people.
By providing beacon exemplars of inclusive design, it aims
to highlight the potential for innovation and business opportunity
in a growing but hitherto neglected field. DBA members only,
working in partnership with users groups, spend approximately
3 months developing a product, service or environment which
can be used and enjoyed equally by able and disabled users.
Five years on, 2005
sees the launch of a new 24-hour Inclusive Design Challenge,
created to bring a unique and compelling twist to the original
programme. Open to all, 5 team leaders have been selected
to take up the 24-hour challenge.
