Aimed at both clients
and design consultancy leaders, this series features high
profile figures from different industry sectors talking about
both the tangible and intangible impact of design on their
organisation.
Hear David Williamson
tell the inspiring story of how design is playing a strategic
role in helping the Progreso model take fair trade to a new
level.
David
Williamson,
Managing Director, Matthew Algie
Fair
trade coffee is the fastest growing sector of the UK coffee
market. Together with Oxfam, Matthew Algie have launched a
chain of fair trade coffee shops, called Progreso, in partnership
with coffee grower co-operatives. The growers own a share
in the business and profit directly from its success.
Aimed
at being the antithesis of the global corporate coffee bar
the design had to allow for individuality, quirkiness and
soul to develop within the shops.
“The
positioning of the ethical message had to be carefully managed
to avoid putting off the casual consumer while at the same
time allowing the ethics to be ‘discovered'. Everything
from signage to the music to the uniforms (or deliberate lack
of them) had to work together to reinforce our credentials
and point of difference” David Williamson
The
first stores opened London - in Covent Garden in November
2004 with the second following in Notting Hill in January.
The choice of locations was deliberate in establishing the
brand credentials. Trade has been brisk and both shops
are doing markedly better than local and national competitors.
Progreso is now serving over 4000 coffees a week to discerning
customers.
