Willott
Kingston Smith, accountants specialising in advising marketing services
companies and responsible for collating this survey, also compare
current levels with those surveyed in 2006 and 2005, commenting
on and summarising trends and developments. As well as fee and salary
comparisons, utilisations rates and employment benefits and procedures
are also reviewed.
"
Our survey shows continued external pressure on margins, as
direct salaries are increasing faster than charge out rates ."
"
Designers need to continue to monitor their key performance
indicators, particularly the gross income to employment costs… We
would expect a well run design consultancy to spend no more than
55% of their gross income on staff costs ."
50%
of respondents reported a turnover of more than £1m so it
is a fair reflection of what's happening at the top end of the sector
(our earlier research with the Design Council revealed that only
5% of the design industry turns over more than £500k a year).
The DBA is committed to professionalising the industry, educating
and advising design consultancies on best practice, financial efficiency,
and how to strengthen and develop their businesses.
