Designing today for tomorrow | DBA webinar

Designers, in their capacity as problem solvers, have an important role to play in addressing some of the great issues of our time.

Given the global challenges we are facing around resource depletion, climate breakdown and sustainability, design can make a positive contribution to solving these issues. And it is the responsibility of designers to lead the way.

Design is fundamentally about how designers respond and react to the world around them – the social, cultural, and political landscape – so, as the world changes, so too must the responses we make as designers. In the past 25 years alone there has been a rapid change in the processes and systems surrounding the work designers do, and our relationship with the world we live in is being re-evaluated. It’s no longer acceptable to make a product with just one use that is not recyclable in some way; consumer demands are changing. But there is still a lot of work to do, and now is the time for design to take the lead.

Join us for an hour online at 3pm on 24 February to explore the remit of the responsibility of designers today and in the future. We’ll be joined by Tom Lloyd, the newly appointed Master of the Faculty of the RSA Royal Designers of Industry (RDI) and founding partner of Pearson Lloyd who, in conversation with Deborah Dawton, Chief Executive at the DBA, will discuss what it means to be a designer today and how design has changed and evolved.

As Master of the Faculty of Royal Designers of Industry, Tom’s perspective spans the breadth of design disciplines. The RDI’s are responsible for designing the world around us, enriching our cultural heritage, driving innovation, inspiring creativity in others and improving our quality of life. We’ll bring this unique and diverse perspective into the discussion.

Tom will share insights into how we can advocate for the relevance of design in solving some of the toughest challenges of our time and champion the positive contribution to our collective futures it can make. Join us for a fresh look at what design means today and what designers can do to seize the opportunities ahead, designing for a better future.

Sign up here and join us live from 3.00pm on Thursday 24 February.
