Inclusive design – where are we now? | DBA webinar

The impact of design touches every element of our lives – from the moment we wake up, the design of the places, products, services and systems we encounter throughout the day shape our experiences.

Inclusive design is by definition a process whereby designers include the widest number of people, especially those excluded by age, ability, gender or race, and the responsibility of designers to be truly inclusive in their work has never been more in the spotlight. The Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design at the Royal College of Art pioneered inclusive design when it was established over 30 years ago, and as the term has evolved and broadened over time, from the initial foundations of designing to cater to people of all ages and abilities, to now striving for equity and inclusivity across gender and race, there will always be more to do and learn about this area.

Join us for an hour online from 3pm on Thursday 27 January to explore the shifting dynamics of inclusive design and get a dose of inspiration. We’ll be joined by the co-founder of the Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design, Jeremy Myerson, to celebrate some of the most impactful and inclusive everyday objects, many by DBA members, as featured in his latest book ‘Designing a World for Everyone: 30 Years of Inclusive Design’. Exploring the impact of inclusive design at different scales, from hand-held objects like a jam jar with a square lid for easy opening, through to large and complex environments like a hospital or workplace – these ground-breaking designs that have an overwhelming positive impact on people’s lives and their day to day experiences.

In conversation with Deborah Dawton, Chief Executive at the DBA, Jeremy will give an insight into the most successful projects which have influenced global design practice and he’ll also delve into those that failed to reach the market. We’ll discuss what we have learnt as an industry over the last 30 years and how this can influence your day to day work for clients today. Join us for a fresh look at inclusivity and how we can use design to make a positive change to the world.

Sign up here and join us live from 3.00pm on Thursday 27 January.
